Where New PhDs Find Community & Opportunity

The ÄûÃʵ¼º½'s (MAA) Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) program is designed to support new PhDs in mathematics as they begin their careers.

Our ÄûÃʵ¼º½Project NExT fellows join a vibrant, supportive community of mentors and peers. Throughout the program, participants get guidance and advice on teaching, research, and navigating the academic environment, preparing early-career academics to thrive in their careers.

Today’s ÄûÃʵ¼º½Project NExT fellows are tomorrow’s award-winning leaders at their institutions, influential members of the MAA, and leaders in the field of mathematical sciences.

ÄûÃʵ¼º½Project NExT Program

Each cohort of ÄûÃʵ¼º½Project NExT Fellows participates in the following:

  • A three-day ÄûÃʵ¼º½Project NExT Workshop in late July or early August, preceding ÄûÃʵ¼º½MathFest
  • ÄûÃʵ¼º½Project NExT sessions during ÄûÃʵ¼º½MathFest
  • ÄûÃʵ¼º½Project NExT receptions and sessions at the Joint Mathematics Meetings
  • A one-day ÄûÃʵ¼º½Project NExT Workshop preceding MathFest (and more during ÄûÃʵ¼º½MathFest) the following year
  • A dedicated digital network that links ÄûÃʵ¼º½Project NExT Fellows with seasoned mathematicians, award-winning professors

At these workshops and other ÄûÃʵ¼º½Project NExT sessions throughout the year, Fellows explore and discuss issues that are of special relevance to new and early-career faculty, such as:

  • Strategies for engaging students in specific mathematics courses
  • Supporting students from historically underserved groups
  • Involving undergraduates in mathematical research
  • Preparing future K-12 teachers of mathematics
  • Writing grant proposals
  • Balancing teaching and research
